teacher of the year award

Dr. Nam Nguyen (left) and Dr. Nancy Austin (right) have been awarded the ‘Teacher of the Year’ award, presented by Dr. Matthew Kwok (centre) of the Richmond Medical Education Committee.

Dr. Matthew Kwok, as the Site Director for Richmond for UBC’s Faculty of Medicine program, shares his Kudos on behalf of the Richmond Medical Education Committee:

In the beginning of this new academic year, we’d like to celebrate what we have accomplished and look forward to what is to come.

We’d like to celebrate and congratulate each one of you as a medical educator. Richmond Hospital and the Richmond Medical Community have grown to be an important medical education site for UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. Currently, seven out of eight core rotations are present at Richmond Hospital. Not only that, we are also a site where many electives are available and well sought after. We have become one of the best sites for medical students and residents to learn. Time and time again I receive positive feedback on Richmond medical educators providing excellence in teaching. This is no small accomplishment. Excellence in teaching comes from dedication and commitment. And to this end, on behalf of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and medical trainees, THANK YOU!!

To recognize excellence in teaching at Richmond Hospital, the Richmond Medical Education Committee would like to start awarding Teachers of the Year on an annual basis. This year, we would like to congratulate and present this award to Dr. Nam Nguyen and Dr. Nancy Austin.

Dr. Nam Nguyen – Just a couple weeks ago, at about 11:30 pm at night when most of us just want to finish our work and go home to sleep, I witnessed Nam patiently reviewing an admission order and providing teaching to a medical student. His willingness to teach at any moment of time demonstrates his dedication to the learning of the next generation of physicians and his commitment to excellence in medical education. Nam is well deserved to be the recipient of this award.

Dr. Nancy Austin – Nancy is not only an excellent medical educator, but also a great role model for medical students and residents. The way she treats her patients and colleagues is well regarded and acts as a great example for future physicians to exemplify. She teaches medical knowledge. She also teaches the art of medicine through the work that she does. Indeed, we are honored to present this award to her.

For this coming academic year, I’d like to introduce you to the team of UBC medical education leaders that have been working hard to serve our medical community:
