If you think back to your medical education, no one prepared you to prevent or mitigate burnout. In fact, medical training conditions you to assume one or all of the following roles and no one showed you the ‘off’ switch:
- Workaholic
- Superhero
- Emotion Free
- Lone Ranger
- Perfectionist
Now add to the above list the two prime directives of doctors: “The patient comes first” and “Never show weakness”. And now you have the perfect storm for physician burnout. Over 80 physicians, residents and guests attended our first Burnout Proof Workshop featuring speaker Dr. Dike Drummond on May 5, 2018. The half-day session provided practical tools and tips for physicians to recognize and prevent burnout, lower stress and build a more balanced life.
What can cause burnout? Any sources of stress and energy drain, such as poor leadership, personal life issues that can manifest as burnout at work, or even simply the practice of clinical medicine.
Dr. Drummond led attendees through practical exercises including:
- Writing an Ideal Practice Description
- Drawing a Venn of Happiness
- Building a Master Plan for Burnout Prevention
- How to be an EMR Power User
- How to Reach Out to a Colleague Who Might be Burned Out
- The Physician’s Guide to Navigating a Bureaucracy
- Balance & Boundaries Training Tips & Hacks
“When will this be offered again? I know so many who will benefit and need this talk!” –

Due to the overwhelming success of our first burnout workshop in May, we followed up with a second workshop in November co-hosted with Burnaby Hospital Medical Staff Association & Physician Society. Almost 120 attendees attended the three-part workshop. Burnout Proof kicked off the workshop followed by two new topics:
- One Minute Mindfulness Training
- Key Practice Efficiency Tools for Team Based Care
Dr. Drummond is a Seattle-based Mayo trained family practice physician, executive coach and CEO of the TheHappyMD.com. In 1999, after ten years as a full service family doctor, Dr. Drummond left his medical practice due to career ending burnout. With no resources at the time to help him recognize and recover from burnout, Dr. Drummond knew what his next calling would be. Since 2011, Dr. Drummond has focused his energy and time into helping other physicians identify, prevent and treat burnout. He has over 17,000 physician subscribers in 68 different countries and has delivered the Burnout Proof Workshop to over 25,000 practicing physicians.
