Projects Highlights 2025/26
1. Title: EDI Discussions pre QMS - the Case for EDI in the Present Political and Economic Climate (Completed)
Lead: Dr. Eliza Chan
Objective: Increase EDI knowledge
Description: A 30-minute presentation to examine the concept of EDI, present the evidence on how EDI is relevant, and that the mindset of EDI should be fostered for the benefit of the wellness of the organization.
2. Title: UBC Family Practice Resident Recruitment Event (Completed)
Lead: Dr. David Li
Description: The UBC Family Practice recruitment event will welcome 10 R1 residents on July 18 to Richmond for hands-on workshops and introductions to the RH MSA, Division of Family Practice, Richmond Hospital, and potential preceptors. The initiative, jointly supported by RH MSA and the Division, aims to foster early connections with the Richmond medical community while showcasing local resources and opportunities. Division staff are coordinating logistics, with funding directed toward teaching content, preparation, and event activities.
3. Title: Flourishing in Medicine - A Skill-Building Course and Series of Workshops for Enhancing Well-being and Addressing Burnout (Completed)
Lead: Dr. Eliza Chan
Objective: Enhance the use of mindfulness as a tool for wellness
Description: This is a continuation of our previously popular workshops on mindfulness. Participants will watch a series of videos, 'Flourishing in Medicine' by the University of Rochester, and use them as a guide for our group discussions on how to manage conflict and respond to errors and bad outcomes.
4. Title: EDI Coffee Chats to Foster Inclusion and Create a Supportive Community
Lead: Dr. Eliza Chan
Objective: Increase EDI knowledge and improve wellness and engagement
Description: Through a series of six carefully planned discussions ("Coffee chats"), staff are invited to share their experiences, discuss inequity in the system, address biases, and brainstorm ideas to create an inclusive space for all, where diversity can flourish. This may be through open discussion, watching movies or Ted Talk with an EDI theme, or book discussion.
5. Title: Cancer Care Café: Rebuilding Team Connection One Conversation At A Time
Lead: Jeremy Ho
Description: The Richmond Cancer Clinic proposes a monthly “Cancer Care Café” — a 10-minute structured break designed to foster casual, cross-disciplinary connections and strengthen team cohesion. Each session will bring together small groups from across departments for light conversation and simple prompts, with multiple time slots offered to support participation while maintaining patient care. By cultivating these brief but meaningful interactions, the Café aims to rebuild a sense of belonging, collaboration, and workplace satisfaction.
6. Title: Peer Support and Peer Coaching
Lead: Dr. Eliza Chan
Objective: Improve well-being and decrease burnout
Description: This project provides funded time for physician peer support and physician coaches to connect with individual medical staff. It also builds a network and community of support within Richmond Hospital to care for our caregivers.
7. Title: Richmond Digital Health Committee
Lead: Dr. April Lu
Description: The Richmond Digital Health Committee, a sub-committee of AMAC working closely with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, will oversee the use of Cerner and other digital health solutions at Richmond Hospital. Comprising physicians, pharmacy, allied health, and supported by CIS, the committee will ensure broad representation in site-wide decisions, physician education, patient safety, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. It will also serve as a forum to address issues, advance new projects, and review Cerner-specific PSLS cases.
8. Title: Navigating Disagreements about Non-Beneficial Interventions in Care (NBIC) - Implementation Champions
Leads: Drs. Alexandros Alexiadis and David Migneault
Description: This project will implement a region-wide strategy to support healthcare teams in navigating disagreements about non-beneficial interventions by finalizing policy tools, operationalizing the Independent Review Team, and delivering targeted outreach and education. Through a network of Local Champions, we will promote awareness, peer coaching, and feedback to embed these tools into routine practice. The goal is to strengthen ethical decision-making, reduce staff distress, and ensure fair, consistent, and patient-centred care across VCH.
9. Title: Building QI medical leadership collaboration
Lead: Dr. Nancy Fu
Objective: Engagement of QI leaders
Description: Twice a year meeting of QI leads from each department to discuss their QI building progress in their departments/divisions and share their current QI projects, ideas, and concerns.
10. Title: Redesigning the Bariatric Program Patient Curriculum and Pathways to Surgery
Lead: Dr. David Harris
Objective: Putting bariatric manual in digital format
Description: The group is currently undergoing a full pathways and systems transformation. They begin by reviewing baseline content with patients to confirm accuracy, ensure it’s up to date, and gather suggestions. Next, they’ll collaborate with the VCH online and module development team to create a more interactive digital format—reducing the time physicians and allied health staff spend on preparation.
11. Title: RH Inpatient Capacity & Discharge Optimization — Capacity Management Pilot Solution
Lead: Dr. David Li
Objective: Convince hospital leaders to see the value of the Cerner integrated AI assistance in developing EDD
Description: The goal is to engage RH physicians, allied teams, and hospital leaders to co-design standardized discharge workflows in Cerner, informed by evidence where EHR-embedded AI improved patient flow and reduced excess days. The project will advocate for the AI solution on the capital list, explore pilot funding, and collaborate with the HA technology team to implement AI-assisted early EDDs and optimized sequencing.
12. Title: Vaginal Birth Collaborative: Richmond Birth Centre
Lead: Dr. Sarah Monahan
Objective: 1. Increased use of mechanical induction; 2. Trial of outpatient induction
Description: The project will include a review of the current state of induction indications, an exploration of alternative methods of labour induction to improve success rates, and an assessment of potential outpatient induction options. It will be carried out by a team of two Obstetricians, one to two Family Practice Maternity Care providers, and one to two Midwives, along with the RNs who are being compensated for their time.
13. Title: Vaginal Birth Collaborative: Richmond Birth Centre
Lead: Dr. Sarah Monahan
Objective: Introduce new maternity care providers
Description: Morning coffee and pastry meet and greet, introduction of new staff.
14. Title: Many Cultures, One Care: Enhancing Clinical Care Through Cultural Literacy
Lead: Dr. Bella Wu
Objective: 1. Enhanced clinician cultural competency 2. More inclusive and collaborative workplace 3. Infrastructure for a sustainable EDI model
Description: This project will include a series of cultural competency sessions. Each session will be facilitated by a cultural ambassador or moderator and will feature discussions on cultural norms and health beliefs, communication tips and basic language phrases, sharing of simple food recipes and holiday traditions, as well as relevant clinical considerations.
