RH MSA Education and Teaching Work Remuneration Application Form
Please note that requests falling within Facility Engagement funding guidelines are not guaranteed for approval. The ultimate decision to fund request(s) for remuneration for education and teaching work is with the RH MSA Executive and is based upon alignment with current priorities and available funds which will be reviewed each year. Approval will be for a limited time period for education and teaching work that contributes to a clear outcome/impact.
This funding is intended for sessional funding for Medical Staff members who lead education sessions for nursing or allied health at Richmond Hospital.
Criteria at a glance:
- Application must be made by an RH MSA member in good standing.
- Educational sessions must be at the request or with permission of a VCH manager or educator (i.e. PCC, nurse educator, nurse manager).
- Maximum 8 hours total of sessional funding per year per RH MSA member.
- Preparation time for PowerPoint slides can be paid to a maximum of 3 hours per hour of presentation time. Preparation for sim-based sessions can be paid to a maximum of 1 hour of preparation time per 1 hour of sim time.

- All applications will be considered individually and additional information may be requested to ensure it meets the criteria.

- This is a new program for RH MSA and the criteria and application process may change as we set up this new funding stream.
- Application for funding should be completed prior to educational sessions and claims must be submitted within 2 months of completion of the session.
Examples of sessions eligible for funding:
- Simulation (Sims) sessions that include nursing and allied health (i.e. in OR, ER, Birth Center, ward)

Examples of education that is NOT funded:
- Informal education of nursing or allied health (i.e. at the bedside, in the OR, etc.)

- Informal or formal teaching of other medical staff (consider applying for Interdepartmental Collaboration funding to fund opportunities to discuss and collaborate on clinically relevant topics).
Steps:
- Complete the application form below for remuneration for a session or series of sessions prior to work being done. You only need to submit this once for the same session series. A new application is required for a different session series.
- The RH MSA Executive will review each request independently and base its decisions to best support Richmond Hospital physician representation. In an effort to ensure equitability across the medical staff, there will be a maximum of 8 sessional hours that can be claimed per physician (per fiscal year), unless authorized by the RH MSA Executive.
- Once approved, your meeting series will be uploaded as an activity on FEMS and will appear in your drop-down menu of available activities to claim.
- Submit your claim(s). Your claim(s) may need to be verified by the session host/lead and/or your Department/Division Head.
- Upon submission of your request, you will receive a notification within 4 business days.
- You may be asked to account for your contribution to the education/teaching session(s) by looping back to the RH MSA Executive on the work.
Background:
The Richmond Hospital Medical Staff Association (formerly Richmond Hospital Physician Society) has a goal to support meaningful physician engagement and representation to better serve our community of physicians, our patients and the Vancouver Coastal Health-Richmond Community of Care. We strive to foster a culture where physicians have an active role in healthcare planning and decision-making, in addition to the provision of healthcare, when it comes to issues affecting physicians, their workplace and their patients.
To this end, the RH MSA has committed funding in accordance with the Facility Engagement funding guidelines, to recognize the time its members are dedicating to representing the “physician voice” when it goes above and beyond the regular scope of their work and role within Richmond Hospital to provide education and teaching to nursing and allied healthcare professionals.
Priority and approval will be given to requests that are in line with RH MSA's priorities as defined by the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding and our members’ input. These are to:
- Improve communication and relationships among the medical staff so that their views are more effectively represented
- Prioritize issues that significantly affect physicians and patient care
- Support medical staff contributions to the development and achievement of Health Authority plans and initiatives that directly affect physicians
- Have meaningful interactions between the medical staff and Health Authority leaders, including physicians in formal HA medical leadership roles
